![]() Today I have Taryn visiting with me and talking about her new highly anticipated release, Heat Wave. DC: Hi Taryn! Thanks for stopping by. What can you tell us about Heat Wave? TARYN: Here’s the blurb: Sent into the human realm to retrieve prodigal princess, Zena Night, Bhyrne Raines is shocked and unprepared for his carnal reaction to the sexy succubus. In service to the succubus queen, the rugged enforcer must stifle the instant passion exploding within him. Fulfilling his royal duty doesn’t allow for quickie dalliances. His biological clock is ticking, and he begins to enter breedspawn, an intense and unstoppable frenzy of mating all fire-demon males must endure. But the more he wants to avoid Zena, the more he’s drawn to her. Reluctant to give up her carefree life of partying among the mortals when the hot-as-sin Bhyrne comes to fetch her for the queen, Zena uses her succubus wiles to entice him, or at least delay the inevitable trip to the royal court. Once in the demon stronghold, hidden deep within the Catskill mountains, she learns the reason for the summons: she must choose a consort within two days. Zena needs a mate. Bhyrne needs to mate. With time running out for both of them, they each turn to 1Night Stand. Can Madame Eve come to the rescue? So, HEAT WAVE is the fourth book in my Sleepy Hollow series of 1Night Stand stories for Decadent Publishing. It’s an erotic paranormal romance. We’ve met the heroine, Zena Night before. She’s the sister of Lily Night, the heroine of LIGHTNING and Dagney Night, the heroine of FROST. Zena’s hero, Bhryne Raines is the cousin of Max Raines, the hero of FROST! It’s a standalone story and you can read it without having read the others…but… [winkie] DC: (laughs) I get it, I get it, let’s buy them all to get the full picture. It’s a very interesting idea. What inspired it? TARYN: When we first see Zena in LIGHTNING, she’s being kind of sultry, naughty and seductive. She HAD to have her own story! DC: Ah, I completely get that. I can’t remember how many times I’ve had a character that just won’t shut up until I give them their own story. I know you release several stories a year. Is there anything you are working on now? TARYN: Big announcement coming later this month or in early September about the Sleepy Hollow series. Aside from that, I’m not sure I’ll have any more published by the end of 2013, but I’m working on a few secret projects that are scheduled for release in 2014 or 2015. DC: Oh, exciting news! Well, I hope you’ll come back and let us all know when you can. Since you seem to have some open space as far as writing time goes, do you have any goals for this year? TARYN: To finish up the projects I’ve committed to! DC: I’ve always found your ideas very interesting and engaging. Many authors struggle coming up with ideas if they haven’t found their “nitch.” How do you come up with your ideas? TARYN: Some of the projects, such as the Sleepy Hollow series, have a framework already in place: The clever and all-knowing Madame Evangeline of the exclusive 1Night Stand agency arranges a sexy one-night hook-up for two people in need of one. And Madame Eve never fails. So…with that basic guideline, you develop characters and give them a story! DC: And there you have it, the rest, as they say, is history. Speaking of which, can you share with us “the call” story? TARYN: A couple of years ago, Angela James of Carina Press left a voicemail message on my answering machine that she wanted to talk to me about my Regency romance, Healing Hearts. It was a Friday, and I was at work. I saw her on Twitter and tweeted, but she tweeted back that it would have to wait until after the weekend. I figured that it was unlikely to be bad news since she’d called. Then I got an email acceptance! All my acceptances since then have been by email. So…it’s possible I’ve never gotten an actual “call.” But the emails are awesome! DC: (laughing) That I can totally understand! Tell us, because you just mentioned the other job, and many of us do work outside of writing. What do you enjoy most about it? TARYN: Making stuff up. DC: So simple, yet so true. Where do you start? Research, plotting, character, or…? TARYN: Character. DC: What did you learn from writing your first book or what do you wish you’d known before becoming published? TARYN: That writing was a business. That a pretty cover and slot on Amazon does not necessarily guarantee you’ll make any bestseller lists. DC: (nodding) Yes, so true. Do you have a favorite time of the day to write? TARYN: I have limited time. So it’s weekends for me. Earlier in the day. I’ve pretty much drained myself by 3. (I have zero discipline.) DC: Many struggle or have to fit in time when they can. And yet then, often we don’t have the inspiration needed to do it at that time. Do you have a favorite hero and/or heroine in your books and why? TARYN: I always love the latest ones. But it’s hard to choose. Like choosing a favorite child. DC: That’s understandable. What about with this book, do you have a favorite scene and why? TARYN: Probably when Bhyrne has to escort Zena back to the Queen’s Court in Duyvil Tand (Devil Tooth), the demon stronghold in the Catskills. It was fun to write. There are creepy demons, an authoritative queen, hero defiance and possessiveness…and total HOTNESS when Bhyrne goes into full-blown heat. DC: Holy shit, I’m anticipating reading it! (laughs) How do you balance writing and your everyday life? TARYN: Poorly. DC: Well, simply enough, but hey, at least you get it done! Alright Taryn, give us an excerpt of your new release: TARYN: Holy freeze gun, Batman. The words died before she managed to expose them to air. Her mouth snapped shut. One of the Queen’s guards stood before her, huge and tall, nearly twice the size of most of the other males in the joint, a hella hunka supernatural male. Clearly not human, although Hugo Boss’d to his Adam’s apple in an apparent bid to fit in among the humans trolling for hot sex, illicit drugs, watered-down booze and loud music. Beneath the fabric of the unstructured designer suit, the toned muscles of a demonic warrior rolled like tidal waves. Even without the small lapel pin the uninformed might mistake for the The Rolling Stones’ logo, she’d recognize him for a captain of the guard. Maybe the Queen’s own Captain. Hellfire and cotton candy. Trouble. T-R-O-U-B-L-E. But, by the goddess, whattahottie! Despite her certainty that his presence in the club corridor boded ill for her, the force of her sudden hunger shook her. Like lightning. Thunder. A desperate bolt out of the blue. Instant connection to him on the paranormal plane, as if he’d wrapped her aura in gold chains and tugged her to him. But did that fast lane to heaven run one way or two? A grim expression straightened the lines of what otherwise might have been a generous, sensuous mouth. A military buzz cut had weed-whacked hair the color of iron. And it didn’t stop there. Without doubt, metal fortified every single cell in the massive male’s body, pure titanium flowing in his veins. The stern planes and angles of a hard-edged, swoon-worthy face set grimly as cement. Though he lounged in the hallway like any Archie or Jughead waiting in line to discharge his rented beer in a urinal, he exuded authority, his carriage and bearing such that he made the others look like a pack of Twizzlers. Oh. Yeah. More than a mere guardsman, she guessed. An enforcer. Ruh-roh. At this moment, she is busy sweeping up the loose masala chai tea leaves she spilled all over the kitchen floor. (Probably because she needs COFFEE.) Wait. Is that something…sparkly?
